The Penang Electrical Association Merchants` Association, (PEMA) is one of the oldest associations of its kind in Penang. Its forerunner was the Penang Electrical Association established before the Second World War with a membership of merchants` and workers alike. On 1st March 1948, S.M. Yussof with eight other electrical merchants founded the Penang Electrical Merchants` Association or PEMA. The nine founding members are S.M. Yusoff, Choo Peng Keat, Chan Pak Leong, Lee Hong Chye, Bok Chong Pong, Oh Hong Seng, Geh Lye Woo, Khor Cheng Kang and Tung Chung. Merchant members from the Wiremen Association formed in 1945 left the organization to join PEMA. With more members and financial resources, the association established its footing at 90-E, Macalister Lane, Penang to hold regular meeting and to discuss matters of common interest.
The first President was S.M. Yusoff who remained in office for only 2 years. The first Honorary Secretary, Choo Peng Keat however was active for much longer and was also the President for four years. During the first decades of its existence, the Association has only about 20 members. Development was slow and uneventful until the association become more active after Merdeka. Currently the Association has more than one hundred and twenty members drawn from companies who are engaged in the in the electrical industries. They are classified according to their business activities such as Contracting, Construction & Services, Suppliers & Trading and Manufacturer.
Our main principal roles is representing the interest of the electrical industries in government sector and international companies and PEMA is also active in supplying latest information of electrical technical details, trainning and seminars for our members..

Penang Electrical Merchants' Association celebrated its 74th Anniversary Dinner Celebration cum Education Awards 2022 on 30 th October 2022 at Noble Season Chinese Restaurant There were a grand total 45 tables kudos to PEMA and its hard working Organising Committee. The event was graced by YB Teh Lai Heng State Assemblyman of Komtar Lucky draw, karaoke, entertainment and presentation of new membership certificates were among the highlights of the highly successful dinner.
During the dinner, PEMA Education Awards 2022 were presented awards to children of PEMA members and children of PEMA's employees who achieve outstanding results PT 3 SPM and STPM Examinations A total of 22 recipients were presented with the awards and a sum totaling RM 4,400 00 was paid out PEMA Education Committee Chairman, Dato Ooi Kok Kee thanks all PEMA members, organisations and individuals for their continuous support which had made the PEMA Education Fund possible.
During the dinner, PEMA Education Awards 2023 were presented awards to children of PEMA members and children of PEMA’s employees who achieve outstanding results SPM and STPM Examinations. A total of 8 recipients were presented with the awards and a sum totalling RM 2,800.00 was paid out. PEMA Education Committee Chairman, Dato’ Ooi Kok Kee thanks all PEMA members, organisations and individuals for their continuous support which had made the PEMA Education Fund possible.
Penang Electrical Merchants’ Association (PEMA) celebrated its 75th Anniversary Dinner Celebration cum Education Awards 2023 on 29th July 2023 at SETIA Spice Convention Centre. There were a grand total 60 tables – kudos to PEMA and its hard-working Organising Chairman - Mr. Lee Kuan Meng & all Organizing Committee. The event was graced by YB Lim Hui Ying, Deputy Minister of Education, Penang Chamber of Commerce (PCCC) President - Dato Seri Hong Yeam Wah & TEEAM President – Ir. Chong Yew Cheong. Lucky draw, karaoke, entertainment and presentation of new membership certificates were among the highlights of the highly successful dinner.
The President, Ir. Lee Weng Keen presented a souvenir to YB Lim Hui Ying, Dato Seri Hong Yeam Wah & Ir. Chong Yew Cheong in appreciation of her time and effort in gracing the occasion. Besides that, President, Ir. Lee Weng Keen & Organising Committee Chairman, Mr. Lee Kuan Meng also presented souvenir to the Company that sponsor for PEMA 75th Anniversary Celebration, that is Diamond Sponsorship Door Gift Sponsorship & Gold Sponsorship. It had been a challenging year for PEMA and what a better way to start afresh the occasion with members and guest mingling and enjoying the dinner in the true spirit of PEMA’s noble vision.
